WHAT TO SEE AND DO IN NIZWA
Start at Nizwa Fort early, before the heat builds. Its vast 17th-century circular tower rises above the old quarter, with views across rooftops, date palms and the foothills of the Hajar Mountains. Inside, defensive passages, rooms and elevated walkways show why Nizwa once held such strategic importance.
The neighbouring souq still trades in dates, spices, pottery, silverwork and khanjars. On Friday morning, farmers and buyers gather for the traditional livestock auction, bringing an energy to the market that is difficult to experience later in the day.
Leave time for Al Aqr and Falaj Daris. The falaj is part of a working irrigation system that supports the farms and settlements around Nizwa, and is one of five aflaj included in Oman’s UNESCO World Heritage property.
